Understanding Different Kinds of Blemishes
Nobody likes to wake up with a face full of acne. If you deal with blemishes, it’s important to know the different types so that you can treat them effectively. Blemishes are considered a broad term which refers to any type of skin mark. If you have spots, discoloration, or flaws that appears on the skin, there are several ways to treat them. Blemishes can be referred to as zits pimples, or acne. Let’s take a deeper look at the different types of blemishes you may encounter:
Probably one of the more common types of acne that people experience are whiteheads. These pimples typically form beneath the skin. Whiteheads form when dead skin cells, bacteria, and oil become trapped within your pores. Other causes of whiteheads can be hormonal changes, genetics, puberty, menstruation, and pregnancy. Since we all have dealt with these at one point or another, we know how painful and annoying they can be. They can develop on your face, chest, back, shoulders, or arms at any age.
Blackheads are a mild form of acne that appear visibly on the skin as dark, small bumps. These bumps are caused by clogged hair follicles. They typically appear on the face but can also be found on your neck, arms, chest, shoulders and back. They get their dark coloring through the oxidation of skin’s pigment, melanin. Some may think scrubbing your skin consistently will reduce the formation or appearance of blackheads, however, that is far from the truth. This will just leave your skin irritated and inflamed, opening a door for infection and other problems.
Cysts are visible bumps on the surface of the skin that is full of pus and often very painful. There are 3 different types of cysts: epidermoid, ganglion, and sebaceous. Sebaceous cysts are the ones caused by blocked glands or ducts. The sebaceous gland produces the sebum that coats your hair and skin. Cysts typically are benign sacks that contain fluid. These must be examined by medical professionals because if you try to remove them yourself, you can end up with permanent scarring or worse, infection.
Pustules are pus-filled bumps that contain a whitish, yellow, protein-rich fluid that typically accumulates at the sight of an infection. They are often misidentified as whiteheads due to their coloring, but there is one simple way to determine the difference. When you have a pustule, it sits atop the skin, meaning the pus-filled bump is protruding from the top layer. When you have a whitehead, the bump appears under the skin.
Papules are very different than pustules because they are a small, raised skin lesions that range in color from pink to brown. They are small, round bumps that appear on the surface of your skin, such as warts, eczema, chickenpox rashes, and dermatitis. They can develop in clusters If you deal with psoriasis or shingles, papules may also form. When you deal with papules, don’t scrub your skin. Instead use warm water and gentle soaps when washing.
Unlike the blemishes above, nodules are a collection of tissue. They’re hard to the touch and can occur at any level of the skin. They vary in color, and are typically bigger than pustules. They are typically deeply embedded into the skin and present pain in the general area. Do not try to pop or drain these because it can also lead to scarring or infection.
